Farm Owner: Erik F |
When deciding some years ago what I value and excel to be when it pertained to
coffee farming, I determined that the finest coffee and the environment were my
primary concerns. Health was a very important consideration, especially with the
emerging emphasis on sustainable or organic coffees which have proved to be
healthier and devoid of nasty pesticides, herbicides and the like. Also, knowing
that with a growing number of people searching for such coffee I could be a
resource to satisfy health conscious people throughout the entire world. My
second concern was to maintain the beauty and tranquil environment that
surrounded my coffee farm. Seeing the deep green valleys and the abundance of
flora and fauna only solidified my commitment to do all that I could to see this
beauty preserved. In sustainable farming all the farming goes into putting back
into the soil and eco-system and not to deplete. With the collaboration of many
interested parties and the expertise of others I believe we have maintained this
commitment and always strive to achieve more and tell others about the growing
need to do this. As a result of these efforts there is such beauty in this
coffee plantation. We plan to eventually open it up more and more to those who
appreciate quality coffee with all the beauty Fincas Las Colonias has to offer
the international coffee drinkers.
Our aim here at Fincas Las Colonias is to set
a high standard for our coffee. We do not want to compromise our aspiration to
produce coffee that leaves you with the impression of excellence, yet with
adventure. Our coffee trees represent the finest Arabica coffee beans, shrouded
by shade trees and the finest volcanic rich soils. With ten of thousands of
coffee trees on the plantation it is of the utmost importance that each tree
receives proper attention to pruning , fertilization and scheduled evaluations
of fruit (what we call the cherries). We monitor, after picking, the size and
quality of the beans as it goes through our thorough processing systems. The
processing of coffee beans are to us as important as the farming. After the
beans are hand picked they are then delivered to the processing center where we
begin to remove the skins to get to the bean, which after several processes we
then determine by size which will be acceptable for exportation and eventually
roasting. We are constantly improving our eco-friendly processing methods and
strategies with the environment and coffee beans in mind. We are not necessarily
interested in the fast processing of beans, but rather embraced the ecological
business model to maintain the beauty of our surroundings and provide you with
the essence of the best organic coffee. We believe here at Fincas Las Colonias
that we can partner with you to continue to make strides and advancements toward
our goals to be one of the finest organic coffee sources throughout the world,
and ultimately bringing a little bit of the beauty of Costa Rica to you, and
your cup.
In the quaint and nostalgic village of Las Colonias resides Fincas las
Colonias. Amongst the vast green back drop and numerous coffee trees is our
farm. The distinct roads can be identified by small gravel stones, winding its
way up the some time long hills. Off in the distance can be seen small plumes of
the volcano Turrialba which has seeded this rich soil for many generations. Many
of the children congregate on the small plots of green grass to play soccer and
enjoy many games. The people of Las Colonias are very friendly and a door of
hospitality is always open, especially as you make you way up the roads. Much of
this small village is given to coffee farming however there are many multi
nationals drawn to this area for it vast beauty and tranquility. It is not
uncommon to sit on your porch and observe several species of birds not to
mention many other types of animals. The rains are like clock work, and have
been a tremendous blessing to the coffee farms. You can see off in the distance,
in the later afternoon, the clouds forming to drop the much needed moisture. the
air is filled with the odor of freshness and moisture, and as soon as you look
up the clouds are above dropping the necessary rains to the brillant green
colored coffee trees. |
